Title: Where you from?
Post by: thane on June 05, 2010, 05:23:47 PM
Although some of us have mentioned it in passing, we generally don't disclose our locations when we post. It'd be interesting to know where we all are. I'll start:

Waipahu, Hawaii, USA (about 15 miles from Honolulu).

Thought I'd bump this up in case some of the newer TCL users wanted to post...

Looking over the posts I'm amazed at the nature of the TCL community. I'd expected users to be concentrated in the U.S. and Canada, with maybe some in the UK and Australia/New Zealand, but the community is much more international even than that.

Why would one expect an under developed country like US where most of users are connected with a telephone modem with 33.6 kbit/s with no highspeed mobile coverage while in rest of the World you get 30Mbit/s in budget plans?

Also, LINUX itself is not a US thing.

World is International. If there is any meaning of original today, LXDE comes from Taiwan, Xfce from Europe/Benelux, ... myself is located in Budapest/Hungary/Europe, ...

;D  Judging by the countries he mentioned,  I suppose Thane was just thinking of the language issue, possibly not realizing that all civilized countries support English at some level.   ;D

More seriously, I had sort of expected to see a much more localized audience.  It is interesting and gratifying to see that the TC community is so geographically diverse, even global.

I did have a little bit of a chuckle at the comment on the state of our connectivity, when even here in the north Georgia mountains far away from a big city every 12 year old has his own 3g mobile phone he is constantly playing with.

Great :) Two years ago I was looking for 3G backup to our corporate network for production sites and it was not possible for example at Spanish Fork and so on. There is development :)

A friend of my commented his trip to US that 'Guys, I was driving at West Coast and for a day there were no reception on car radion, not FM only but even on MW or LW. Even not a single AM broadcast, only satellite." This is about coverage :)

I'm not negative, just explaining how big your country and how areas can differe.
Title: Re: where you from?
Post by: Jason W on May 08, 2011, 05:19:36 AM
I meant it all in good humor, like I knew your statement was.  And that your point was that the US is not the center of the TC universe, which is true.

I do find it funny that kids nowadays are carrying electronics that 15 years ago only executives owned and even then did not have the capabilities that the devices do now.

And there certainly is not uninterrupted service here in the mountains, that is for sure. In fact, hardly any radio reception, but analog radio is so '80s anyway. :)

I live just 30 miles from the center of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and I get no broadcast televis1on reception at all.  I don't miss it a bit and I think my children are better off this way, but it does illustrate the way coverage can be spotty.

When I first moved out of home (20 or so years ago) I did not have the money for a TV, and discovered to my amazement, that the radio was a great alternative. And not the commercial stations either, I would put it on classical or jazz instrumental stations and read books about history or some fiction. It was a great and peacful time, then my parents came round to visit + drop off a TV and i've been zombiefied ever since....
I often remember the peace but can't seem to throw the TV out.

i keep tv around only to play console games.

also, in my country there is an ongoing migration to DVB-T broadcasting, and my tv is not capable of that standard. and don't really feel like getting a new tv or a receiver box - problem solves itself ;)

Well, when I started the thread I thought that because TC is an English-language distro based in California most users would be in the U.S. or other English-speaking countries. Of course with my pre-internet mentality I wasn't sufficiently cognizant that anyone with internet access could find it and that English is probably the main international language. TC has a unique design philosophy that apparently has a wide appeal.
