Title: Feature for future: inotify / incrond automatically backups?
Post by: gutmensch on April 06, 2010, 07:26:38 AM
Heya everyone,

Yesterday I read a nice article about the use of inotify (via incrond, incrontab, etc.) and I wondered whether this would be a nice feature for the tc backup procedure. From the IRC channel I think it's clear that most "new users" have difficulties using the backup procedure as it is nowadays (though I'm not saying that it requires much insight).

But right now we already have the feature that tc nearly automatically finds some place to save backup files and maybe extensions, why not go farther and let the incrond monitor file changes in special areas of the file system (e.g. /home or /etc and NOT /usr/local) and let him add the files automatically to /opt/.filetool.lst, so that in a normal use case nobody would have to edit the .filetool.lst anymore? My understanding of the working incrond daemon is, that it can be used very carefully so that it's not blowing up the system.

Cheers,
Robert

I don't think the system should go over the user.

I haven't looked closely at incrond, but even if only modify events were specified, how to tell whether it was the user doing the modification.
