Title: tinycore-persistent
Post by: julianb on March 03, 2010, 06:16:52 AM
much appreciation to the tiny core team for all the great ideas that have already been implemented in tinycore.

just fired up Linux Mint on my netbook, and was thinking, wouldn't it be great if Linux Mint were designed to run off the hard drive with it's core (650MB) not taking any more disk space than it does on CD, in similar fashion to tiny core. and you could delete the "big core" if desired, and you could delete the files added after the core if desired... and they'd be separate.

So then I thought, wouldn't it be cool if tiny core were doing "backup" on the fly, persistently, but doing it to a squashfs file separate from the system core file.

Don't actually know how to implement this idea myself, but one of the reasons I think of it is that shutdown is often slow for me on tinycore when doing backup. Another reason is, there's been some problem with Chromium where whenever it's installed on my machine, the backup works successfully but goes slower and pops up an error as though backup failed.

I don't use backup. I use persistent home and opt, and make extensions for anything else, such as printer setup.

I believe this is better than backup on the fly.

The only advantage of backup, is that usb drives will last longer when Tiny Core is installed on them. Backup is done at the end, instead of every time you do something, minimizing the amount that is written to the usb drive.

If installed on a hard drive, I recommend using persistent /home and /opt. If you don't know how to make extensions, use backup only for those things you want to save not in home or opt. If you learn how to make extensions, you don't need to use backup at all.

If you put Tiny Core on your hard drive and create a persistent /home, you can disable the backup. Everything is saved to your regular ext3 filesystem and shutdown is very rapid. See this link for one way to do it:

I don't use persistent opt or home (I'm saving to a usb stick) but I generally uncheck the backup unless I've made some change to configuration or browser favorites that I want to save. Also I clear the cache, history, etc. on exiting the browser (there's been some things on other threads about slow backups being a result of unnecessary browser info being saved). You might also look at some of the suggestions for files to be added to the xfiletool.lst.
