Title: Who is killing my laptop's boot record?

Today I was playing with TC 2.7 and 2.6.1 from USB, updating extensions, compiling, etc. Nothing special. No crash, no issues. Of course many reboots and halts. Later on had to work on Windows, so booted it normally from the HD. WINDOWS dis not start, and got the message, system corrupted. Its repair tool fixed the problem. No data or system got correpted, for sure it was just the boot.

I'm not using the machines HDD at all, did not use usbinstall, fdisk nor any other tool which is attaching the HD. Strange. I can not and to be honest do not want to reproduce.

It happened already two times before sometime in October but couldn't find any reason and issue did not repeated till now.

Any idea?

Sounds like a failing hard drive, or a memory problem causing disk corruption.

Running memtest for a day shows no errors, HDD looks OK. No crashes, everything works fine. Just the boot gets corrupted.

I have a friend who had the same problem.

After every time I booted a live CD, a similar error would appear when he would try to boot Windows, and we had to do some kind of restore/repair.

I think that some anti-virus program was the cause.

Hmm ... long shot, but perhaps you've picked up a virus on the windows side? Maybe it does something funky when you shut down Win.

Low chance. There is a realible antivirus sw and a very limited Windows use, mainly WORD/EXCEL use.

One of the main reasons I moved over to linux; new downloads almost every day until things stop working.
