Post by: leon8200 on January 14, 2016, 03:06:35 PM

Thunar.tcz is available in the TC 6.x x86 repo.
Code: [Select]
tce-load -wi Thunar

I'm afraid XFCE does not have proper start scripts and won't work as is, if at all.
I couldn't get it to work but I'm happy with Openbox.

XFCE apparently works in dCore but i've never heard of anyone using it and it may not behave the same way compared to a full featured Linux distribution (Control Panel items, etc). Maybe a dCore user in the know will respond. From my experience, once used to a lighter weight and more flexible Window Manager never want to run a full Desktop Environment again. Misalf's suggested Openbox is great, my current favourite is Fluxbox which has a built-in panel. JWM and IceWM appear stark but resemble a more traditional XFCE type layout. All of these WMs are extremely configurable, can be made to look and perform amazing.

Do you have any kind of desktop running? It should create a wbar icon.

To install a Window Manager open Apps browser, click "Apps" -> "Cloud (Remote)" -> "Browse".
Click on the "Search" drop-down menu and set it to "Tags".
Type  window manager  in the search field, press ENTER.

After you have installed a different window manager that you want to use, make sure it is the only one set to be loaded OnBoot.
"Apps" -> "Maintenance" -> "OnBoot Maintenance".

thanx for the help Miself and nitram, I now have nautilus and openbox setup, and they seem to be functioning, I would like to ask one last thing before wrapping up my thread,

I cant seem to drag/drop anything to my desktop, what I want to do is be able to place files and application shortcut's/launchers on the desktop for easy access, how can I do that?

See  nautilus --help  which shows the  --force-desktop  option.
You could create a file in the  ~/.X.d  directory, containing:
Code: [Select]
nautilus --force-desktop &
So it starts each time X is launched.

icons showed up on the desktop, but then they disappeared and I can't get them back, I don't understand what to do

Make sure you add the  "&"  sign at the end of the command, so that it runs in the background but the script can exit.
Also, can you start it from a terminal window?

I can start it from the terminal, but my dock at the bottom is missing now, and I cant right click launch applications from the menu, when I right click I only see "new folder" "paste" "organize desktop by name" and "keep aligned"

Oh, yes. ~/.X.d  scripts run after wbar was launched, so a root-window / Desktop changing app will sit on top of wbar.
So remove the ~/.X.d script and instead, add an entry to  ~/.xsession.
Change this
Code: [Select]
[ -x $HOME/.setbackground ] && $HOME/.setbackground
[ -x $HOME/.mouse_config ] && $HOME/.mouse_config &
[ $(which "$ICONS".sh) ] && ${ICONS}.sh &
[ -d "$HOME/.X.d" ] && find "$HOME/.X.d" -type f -print | while read F; do . "$F"; done
... to something like this
Code: [Select]
[ -x $HOME/.setbackground ] && $HOME/.setbackground
[ -x $HOME/.mouse_config ] && $HOME/.mouse_config &
nautilus --force-desktop &
[ $(which "$ICONS".sh) ] && ${ICONS}.sh &
[ -d "$HOME/.X.d" ] && find "$HOME/.X.d" -type f -print | while read F; do . "$F"; done
So the Nautilus desktop gets started before wbar.

I don't understand, the .X.d folder has nothing in it

If you change any settings or add files to your home dir, you need to run  backup  to make the changes persist across reboots. This happens automatically by default if you exit via  TC Exit  tool.

The right-click options you get are the default for Nautilus. If you want more or something else, you need to study and change the settings for Nautilus.

BTW, I use iDesk.

Hmm, I just tried  nautilus --force-desktop  but can't get wbar to be displayed on top.
Same thing with  pcmanfm --desktop .

As I said I'm using iDesk. Needs manual editing of config files for each icon and has no right-click menu, but doesn't interfere with the root window or apps like wbar as those do mentioned above.

I haven't tried ROX-Filer's desktop feature in combination with wbar.

I don't know if this OS is right for me, I just chose it so I would have a "custom" "stable" and "fast" linux platform
for smooth browsing and gaming, if I go through the trouble and get it setup the way I need it to be I still don't
know if it will be capable of my meeting my needs so before I waste everyone's time here at the forums would you be able to tell me if tiny core is able to run low end games?
the dependencies I would need are

libgtk2.0-dev
libglu1-mesa-dev
libsdl1.2-dev
libglade2-dev
gettext zlib1g-dev
libosmesa6-dev
intltool libagg-dev
libasound2-dev

Those look good:
gtk2.tcz (2.24.25)
glu.tcz (9.0.0)
SDL.tcz (1.2.14)
SDL2.tcz (2.0.0)
libglade.tcz (2.6.4)
gettext.tcz (0.19.2)
zlib_base-dev.tcz (1.2.8 )
intltool.tcz (0.51.0)

By seaching for "mesa" via Apps broser's Tags option, it seems
mesa is provided by  glu.tcz ,  libGL.tcz  and  libEGL.tcz .
Installing  Xorg-7.7-3d.tcz  and  xf86-video-<YOUR_GRAPHICS_CHIP>.tcz should be enough.

libasound.tcz (1.1.0) might need update in your case.

Hi leon8200

By the way, I'm currently on 7.x where the intel graphics driver is broken for 3D (in my case). However, on 5.x & 6.x I used to play AoE2, Diablo2 and Quake2 through WINE, and Doom (Zandronum), zSNES and Minecraft natively. Also several other SDL games. So it's possible in general.
Tiny Core is no anti-gaming platform. Even if it is not TC's goal, you can make it a gaming station. As usual though, a nvidia card and it's proprietary drivers are probably preferable regarding 3D.
I couldn't get the Freespace SCP client to compile, but IIRC that was a perl version incompatibility.

thanx for the help, I tried to get desmume "a nintendo ds emulator" to run, it opened but when I tried to load a rom it failed saying it could not load it, maybe a permission issue? I tried running it in the terminal "sudo + the file path' and the terminal could not find the path, my emulator is on another HDD so maybe a HDD permission issue? I dont know anything about tiny core  :-\

I don't think this OS is for me I dont have hours to sit and read and play with it, Ive already dedicated over 2 month's of my time trying to learn linux and got nowhere but a headache, I just don't have any patience left for it, I have always spent a few hours reading and playing with linux trying to get it to do the things I want it to do before I ask for help at a forum, but I just can't think anymore, my brain just shuts down when I try to read and learn, I'll have to check that out some other time, I'll bookmark it, thanx

I don't know how to get "any" desktop installed, can someone please provide me with explicit instructions on what I need to do in order for tiny core plus to do the following

1 drag files to and from the desktop
2 place application shortcuts on the desktop
3 HAVE A DESKTOP!!!

please anyone???

There are file managers that have a desktop feature (f.e. pcmanfm, rox, nautilus) where you can drag things around. You would certainly have to configure it to play nicely with Tiny Core though.
For simple icons I'm using iDesk.
