Team Tiny Core is pleased to announce that Tiny Core 6.0 Beta1 is available for public testing:
http://repo.tinycorelinux.net/6.x/x86/release_candidates/
http://repo.tinycorelinux.net/6.x/x86_64/release_candidates/
This is an beta level cut. If you decide to help test, then please test carefully. We don't want anyone to lose data.
Most extensions have been copied over from the 5.x repo - note that the fltk library has been updated to 1.3.3 to enable unicode. fltk-1.1 and 1.3 can be installed at the same time, and old apps using 1.1 will continue to work.
Although not in the base, wbarconf has been updated in the iso and wl-modules-KERNEL has been added, but not tested, due to lack of hardware (user cut firmware and blacklisting as per the info file will still be required)
We appreciate testing and feedback.
If you use distribution files note that you need a new vmlinuz and core.gz (or rootfs.gz + modules.gz)
Changelog for 6.0 beta1:
* kernel updated to 3.16.6
* glibc updated to 2.20
* gcc updated to 4.9.1 (patched)
* e2fsprogs base libs/apps updated to 1.42.12
* util-linux base libs/apps updated to 2.25.1

Testing on x86... working ok till now...
Will we have an "upstream" Core with the latest Kernel in the future?
-
more "latest" than 3.16.6 you mean?
-
I was saying something like a rolling release, following the kernel releases, as we are in the 3.17.3 right now and have a 3.18rc.
-
I'm not sure team tinycore has any plans for a kernel update between major tinycore releases unless it's to fix some kind of major bug - that being said, making your own private kernel update is not too difficult.
-
I gave '6.0 beta1' a spin under qemu yesterday & all seems to be well with it, thanks. :)

Hi guys!
First I want to say that I'm very pleased with the fix of the flwm window manager! Love it! Have made a couple of observations. Neither Firefox (21) nor Icecat works right out of the box. Watcher surprises me with the information that I'm using over 400 % of the memory. Didn't know that I had that much. ;-) So there is a little to do but I'm very pleased to see that the improvements of TC continue.
Have fun improving TC,

Gave watcher a much-needed update. Watcher 1.9 now available in the x86 repo.
-
Neither Firefox (21) nor Icecat works right out of the box.
Firefox 21.0 and icecat works fine here. What error message you get starting them in terminal?
-
Here are the results of running ff in a terminal (wich I tried before too).
tc@box:~$ firefox
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /tmp/tcloop/firefox/usr/local/firefox/libxpcom.so:
libxul.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Couldn't load XPCOM.
tc@box:~$
So it seems that something is missing. I guess it was the same with Icecat.
Kind greetings and thanks for all your fine work bm!,
meo
-
libxul.so is part of both packages.
-
That missing library is part of the firefox.tcz. Either you have a bad copy or there is something fundamentally wrong with your installation.
Run Apps. Do Md5 Checking and check for updates.
-
meo, how much RAM do you have in that box?
-
There's some other component missing here... Installed firefox-official and had same issue. Have just updated firefox-official to v33.1.1 and will advise, though it's looking like a missing dep..
I think we need a new thread for tc-6.x extensions?
Update: two dep files missing.. see new post
-
Also noticed fltk has been updated to v1.3 in tinycore.iso so apps like fluff in tc-6 repo which have been built on fltk-1.1.10.tcz for libfltk_images.so.1.1 would not start until fltk-1.1.10.tcz added (or possibly apps recompiled).
-
ok, firefox (at least latest Official versions) require
libXdamage.so.1 (a dep of cairo) &
libcairo.so.2
so installed extension
cairo.tcz (and deps)
now firefox loads fine
not sure why these are missing, maybe the firefox dep files need updating..?
-
Hi again!
Had cairo.tcz installed but maybe it didn't load. Have changed it to load at boot now and firefox works. Took the time to try some other browsers and fifth doesn't seem so bad. Thanks juanito!
Thanks and have fun,
meo
-
...fifth doesn't seem so bad. Thanks juanito!
It's Curaga you need to thank for that :)
-
Also noticed fltk has been updated to v1.3...so apps like fluff in tc-6 repo...
fluff is not in the tc-6.x repo??
-
Which firefox dep needs updating? Also, fltk-1.1.10 is still available, and dep files of FLTK 1.1 apps should include it.
-
Hi curaga!
(Even though it doesn't belong here)Thanks for the FIFTH! Nice to see some new software around. I'm running Plan 9 OS on Raspberry Pi and that REALLY is something different but I love it. Keep up the good work!
Kind Greetings,
meo

Firefox works great and dep's are good too, but needs cairo.tcz adding to the firefox.tcz.dep file. Not sure how I missed that in the past..

Added to x86 firefox.tcz.dep and firefox-official.tcz.dep.
-
Fifth browser is actually really good too

I think we have a winner! new fluxbox compiled for tc-6.x without libiconv, is working very well. give me just a few more days..
-
Hi coreplayer2!
Sounds interesting! Have always liked fluxbox.
Have fun,
meo
-
Are custom patches "allowed"?
You can do stuff like this with fluxbox:
session.screen0.toolbar.tools: rootmenu, workspacename, nextworkspace, showdesktop, iconbar,
Notice "rootmenu" and "showdesktop" which are not documented I think, yet natively available.
With the attached .diff, those 'toolbar icons' get their own 'arrows' (UP and DOWN in addition to LEFT and RIGHT).
See attachments.
-
Sounds great. I think a default extension and a _mod version sound like the way to go?

Hi!
LXTerminal is missing a dep it seems.
tc@box:~$ lxterminal
lxterminal: error while loading shared libraries: libffi.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
tc@box:~$
Kind Regards,
meo
-
LXterminal must be rebuilt due to libffi changes. In the mean time you can install libffi5.tcz
-
Hi bm!
Now it works. Thanks!
Over and out,
meo
-
The tcz audit tool "submitqc6" has been rebuild for tc-6.x (x86) and submitted. However a required dep "zsync.tcz" is not currently in the tc-6 repo, I am assuming the zsync extension from tc-5 repo can be used on the client/user side for use with submitqc6..?

Anybody else getting these errors with gcc v4.9.1 ??

Both issues appear to have patches
here https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/5/25/62 (https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/5/25/62)
and https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/9/18/79 (https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/9/18/79)
though haven't tried the patches yet..
update, corrected link above
-
zsync copied over to the x86 and x86_64 repos - thanks.
Note that on tc-6.x, the zsync file will be created on the server side.
-
Ok thanks for the zsync.tcz I was inquiring because it is a dep of submitqc, so for testing the newly modded submitqc6 (I think '6' appended to the extension name is appropriate).. for compatibility with tc-6.x for this I copied over zsync from a local tc5 install.
thanks
Oooops i think I repeated myself there, sorry
