Title: xorg-7.6
Post by: hiro on October 09, 2012, 06:48:43 AM
Just upgraded my thinkpad (Intel 945GM) to 4.x

1. when I switch to console the console stays black. when I switch back to Xorg I can see the console's text for a flash though. Xorg itself is always working.

2. How do you use VO_XV in mplayer?

Hi hiro
If it's not installed, maybe you need  graphics-KERNEL.tcz?

mplayer -vo xv

No, I have graphics-KERNEL. Do I need a special version of Mplayer, or a special Xorg addon or so to have XV support?
What used to work in 3.x doesn't work here. Xorg-7.6 + Mplayer-nodeps.

Perhaps someone might also want to update the Mplayer-*.tcz.info files so that it's more clear how they differ and what one should want to use them for. There are currently four of them.
Also the Xorg-*info files. On the one hand Xorg-7.6 has acceleration (I'm using at least 2d), on the other hand it says you have to use the -3d.tcz extension for acceleration, and yet another conflicting piece of information is

Tips on 3D and X keymaps can be found in
      /etc/X11/README.xorg.conf.

and

Current:        2011/09/23 Fix 3d

This is more a request to fix the documentation than a support request. :D

All the mplayer builds support XV, I believe. For Xorg, please post your Xorg.0.log.

One thing that changed from 3.x is that Xorg no longer depends on all the drivers (more modularization was requested), so if you don't pick a driver, it's using vesa.

you're right, I overlooked that in some sense there are two driver extensions that I have to load now, graphics-KERNEL + the intel drivers.

But the order is also important, you have to load the intel driver first, then graphics-KERNEL, and Xorg last.
This is not obvious enough to the novice.

Both issues are now fixed for me after finding out about this.

Hm, the order shouldn't matter, as long as all are loaded in onboot (and graphics- is a dep of -intel, so it can be removed from onboot).

Everything runs smoothly. I found a way to make mplayer use 2 threads so I can eventually watch fullhd movies without first converting (or re-downloading) them on this old x60s.

hiro

I am having an unrelated matter, new vlc, but keyword search for boot order brought me here. Can you confirm that onboot list does not need to be in a particular order please if you have time. As you appear to be suggesting you needed to change the order?

cheers

Yes, problems occurred only if I tce-loaded these extensions manually after boot. Now with the stuff in onboot.lst there are no problems
