Title: what do you think about adding bootcode backup[=time]?
Post by: AbNoRMiS on August 19, 2012, 07:32:50 AM
to automatically backup was made after a preset time
or by default if don't specify time then backup was made each 45 minutes for example
of course it can do as separate extension but it seems to me that would be nice have it in core

Hi AbNoRMiS
Maybe you could use  cron  for that?

of course i meant this
already have bootcode cron
but when using bootcode backup (or maybe autosave)
then even automatically add cron task

The philosophy is to have core be as small as possible with extensions for added features.
This is not even a new feature as it can be accomplished with the current system using cron.

i think that it will add three or only two additional lines to /etc/init.d/tc-config ;)
but it will be convenient for beginners who may even not know what is this cron
by the way as simple example i also never have worked with cron
but if you want i could make and submit these three rows for your consideration
or can someone else will want to do this :)

Why don't you write a wiki article on how to automate timed updates using cron?

can you meant not updates but an automatic backup? :)

Yes, I meant to say backups.
Title: Re: what do you think about adding bootcode backup[=time]?

are you mocking me? why do it?
if after added only one bootcode
it will become never needed

No I am not mocking you.
Adding a boot option is much more involved than adding 3 or 2 lines of code.

Hi AbNoRMiS
I see nothing that looks like mocking in this thread.

sorry for the misunderstanding
but i have two questions for which i have only one answer
how many additional lines took bootcode cron?
Quote
tc@box:~$ grep -ni cron /etc/init.d/tc-config
87:            cron) CRON=1 ;;
577:[ -n "$CRON" ] && /etc/init.d/services/crond start
two
why they was added if may add just one to /opt/localboot.sh ?
....

p.s.
and one more question
someone of tinycore users usually uses bootcode cron?
Title: Re: what do you think about adding bootcode backup[=time]?
Post by: gerald_clark on August 20, 2012, 07:32:25 PM
You are ignoring all the rest of the code that those two lines start.
Title: Re: what do you think about adding bootcode backup[=time]?
Post by: AbNoRMiS on August 20, 2012, 08:33:01 PM
sorry, we do not talk about it
this (rest of) code is already included in core
and does its job if needed

  I dont like the idea.

Boot options should only be for things needed to boot the system properly and not to setup an entire system to user preferences. Thats my princip to be specific to your surgestion i would really not like my backup to be overwritten with files which state i have not cleared! One nice thing with tiny core is that when you boot you have a fresh system from your "commit point". I also like TCL to be as stripped as possible and not with all kinda default features. I really really like i know what im getting and work my way up to what i need instead of the oposit. mosecure vs lesecure. From that point on one can make own distributions with ones own default setups.

Also how would this default feature effect unwritable systems or dump terminals?

i also like the fact that when tinycore boots up i get fresh system system only with saved changes that i need
but please tell me when you reboot or turn off tinycore then you don't use backup to save your own changes?
maybe you've never use backup during working through control panel or by using command filetool.sh -b
maybe someone required from you to use some bootcodes by default or you have own choice to use bootcodes which only you need?
or maybe you've never seen software that has autosave features to backup data when failures or disconnecting power?
maybe you has never unexpected disconnect power or system failures do not occur?
if you don't needed this then maybe you will write to openoffice developers so that they must removed autosave features?

if for some reason you need to make backup of unwritable system areas or terminal dumps then do it please...
i'm talking about specific clear thing but you talk about completely different things that are not relevant to this

please sorry for rude example
let's remove bootcode cron and automatic backup for rebooting and shutting down tinycore as unnecessary
because anyone can add row /etc/init.d/services/crond start into /opt/localboot.sh
or execute filetool.sh with desired options before rebooting or shutting down tinycore
only need to write couple pages into wiki to describe this

Give it up.
You asked what we think.
We told you.
It is not open to debate.

well
again sorry for my following harsh remark
you are now discussing about cosmetic changes appbrowser buttons that i'm sorry frankly nobody needs
because appsbrowser and so works excellently without them instead to not distract roberts from really useful work
but for some reason you reject my proposal which as i believe will be useful for many users
but i'm sure that only time will judge us and ever this option will be included in tinycore as permanent
Title: Re: what do you think about adding bootcode backup[=time]?

The difference here is that we have been asked to test and comment on release candidates.

yes, i agree with that
thank you for replies to my questions

Let Robert decide wether to accept or reject a proposal. But please do not qualify others request as above.

sorry bmarkus, as seen from discussion above
i does not insist but i just asked to consider
i outlined my arguments and you can lead yours
but when cause arguments that don't relate to this
i certainly have rights to challenge this
it is basically looks as normal discussion ;)

You did not ask for arguments. You asked for opinions.
You don't then start arguments with their opinions.

sorry, but i can explain my arguments only within my knowledge of english
i not always can do it as i need and not always can exactly understand written
i use google tranlate with significant corrections

always difficult to avoid misunderstandings
main thing is not dwell on this :)
