Making tinycore boot from usbstick?
« on: March 12, 2009, 01:39:09 PM »
Hi, I'm trying to make my U3 Cruzer 4gb usb stick to boot tinycore, but I have generaly no idea on what to do.

I have tried googling for answers, but most were prefixed installers that formatted and installed everything.
The rest were "how to format and boot <insertfancynamehere>".

Could one of you here tell me what to do?

_Thank you

this is supposed to be easy if you follow roberts instructions for unetbootin: http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=111.msg748#msg748

but... sometimes it's not, let us know. i don't use it, because i go ext2 and use extlinux. your u3 is probably win32... but if it's not, or if you're using the encryption, you'll probably need to format it.

other links that talk about unetbootin:

http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=720.msg4405#msg4405 (don't copy this one exactly, he needed to change it, curaga replied "you should not use both home and backup, they overlap; also home should not be used on fat32.")

I'll read the links you posted and take it from there, thanks for your help. Will post more when I figure more out ^

Sorry for the duble post  :-\

Okay I did the unetbootin thing, got the files onto the stick, change from iso to sys on the files.

But I get a kernel image not found error when trying to boot.

This is what my usb stick looks like atm;

like i said, i have no experience with unetbootin, only extlinux. if i find the answer i'll let you know, but it's not unlikely someone else will know and mention it.

i still recommend unetbootin because so many people here do, and though i prefer extlinux, i don't like suggesting it to anyone else- i don't like telling people to change the partition on their usb (or anything else.) if they've already changed it, that's when i recommend the method juanito and i use. posting the contents of syslinux.cfg may help.

Hi, I'm trying to make my U3 Cruzer 4gb usb stick to boot tinycore...

It's possible that you need to remove the U3 parts of things in windows first - if I remember correctly, there's a utility somewhere out there that will remove U3.

Edit: Try http://www.u3.com/uninstall/final.aspx
