Idea for Backup
« on: October 27, 2009, 09:14:47 PM »
I have discovered that using persistent home and opt, you don't need to backup at all.

Having discovered that, backup could be used occasionally to backup personal files.

With the present system, you also backup cache and settings of programs.

You can make a long list in .xfiletool.lst, to eliminate this.

It would be nice to have the option to exclude all hidden files simply.

One option would be to enable /home/tc/.* in .xfiletool.lst.

Not sure what is being asked for.

Backup and file management in general varies widely and Tiny Core supplies the tools and options to cover a wide variety of uses.

The default is to have a backup to support the nomadic use of Tiny Core. But you can elect to use persistency to various levels, you can choose to turn of backup at boot time, or at system (.profile) level. Or you can opt to control which dynamic content is to be included in the backup. All of these are choices that are available.

Your personal use may not be appropriate for others, Using persistent home and opt may be useful in some circumstances, it others perhaps not. Once used persistent binds you to that drive, and unless it is removable, it binds you to that computer.

.xfiletool.lst is not a generic text file, its specifications are determined by tar's implementation of the -X option.

Some people use backup to save files, cache and settings.

Some people use persistent /home and /opt to save files, cache and settings, not backup.

For the people who use persistent /home and /opt (not backup) to save settings, backup could be used for another purpose. That is to backup personal files (but not program cache and settings).

This can be achieved at present by putting a long list in .xfiletool.lst.

It would be nice to have a simple method to exclude all hidden files (rather than the long list).

I don't know how difficult it would be to implement.

If it is difficult, it is not essential. If it is not too difficult, it would be nice.

For a dynamic setup, you could script up something to remove such entries in the .xfiletool.lst, then add the new ones before backing up.

This seems like a highly user-specific preference though...
