Updated as Rich's post (isn't this an FAQ? I couldn't see it there) and rhythmbox runs a treat.

Unfortunately it doesn't see my upnp server (even with grilo plugin added) but that is a separate issue that I will look into over the weekend.

You probably need to load libsecret, start the avahi daemon and enable something in the preferences to access dlna/upnp streams.
