When usbinstall executed by a non root user script terminates immediately. Would be good to add a message like

"You must be a root user to install"

or something like that.

Is there any drawback to using usbinstall to install to a hdd instead of a flash drive?

It wipes your drive? And the zip option might lose some available space.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Sure but if you're looking to easily install tc to a hard drive via ext or hdd methods, are there any obvious drawbacks to using usbinstall vs. http://www.tinycorelinux.com/install.html?

No. It isn't as flexible, and uses a different bootloader, but for the install, no drawbacks really.
