webcam to be connected in step1; skype in step2; HOWTO?
« on: January 14, 2011, 02:50:40 PM »
Hello,
since this forum is making a rocket from my poor man PC (wlan out, ethernet powerline adapter in, win98 out, TCL in, word out, leafpad in, excel out, gnumeric in, midhnight commander in, flume in, etc.),
then I found again something I used in Korea few years ago: a webcam from Logitech (even the koreans from the internet company said 7 years ago my PC was too old for that.. but it worked..).
I really dont know if its worth; but I should give a try.
So, I will need few help from here:
a) which extensions should I load?
b) has somebody a skype extension?
Any Idea are welcome in order to make the first steps.

skype is not freely redistributable.

As a quick step by step that may help you:
1- download 'skype_static_ ??? .bz2' from their site
2- untar it
3- cd to the ' skype_static_ ??? ' directory.
4- {down}load these extensions:
    tce-load -wi firmware
    tce-load -wi Xorg-7.???
    tce-load -wi alsa
    tce-load -wi glib2
    tce-load -wi libv4l
5- start sound and adjust mic
    sudo /usr/local/etc/init.d/alsasound start
    amixer set Mic 50% unmute
    amixer set Capture 50%
6- run the program: ./skype
    IMPORTANT NOTE:
if the cam is showing an upside down picture, then load this lib before starting skype by typing:
        LD_PRELOAD=/usr/local/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so ./skype

7- It worked like a charm on different 10 years old and brand new computers, where Xorg wasn't really a must just the color depth 24/32 bits.
