MacBook pro 2,2 and TC 6.0
« on: January 15, 2015, 12:35:00 PM »
Just downloaded and made boot disk of TinyCore 6.0 after reading over all the stuff on the web site.  Trying to get it to boot on my macbook pro 2,2 from DVD.  When I reboot the machine and hold the "apple" key to give me boot options, it tries ever so hard to mount the disc and fails.

Here's what happens, step by step:
1. reboot, holding apple key.
2. disc spins for a while (a minute or less)
3. disc ejects
4. computer boots from hard drive.

When the machine boots from hard drive, OSx, I can take a look at the disc and all looks just fine.  I don't have a PC to attempt booting this disc with.
I do have a copy of Ubuntu 14.04 on disc, and my computer will recognize it as bootable, but can't actually load Ubuntu.  This old computer just won't do it.

The bottom line is, I want to make this old macbook useful for a couple more years if at all possible.  Can TinyCore do it for me?

The functionality I need is:
Spreadsheets
Word Processing
MP3 and streaming audio
Silverlight (for netflix, amazon VOD, etc.)

Should I keep playing with this old relic, or get the shovel out?

Thanks!

You need another boot mechanism. EFI.
http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,13445.0.html

You can search for it here in forum.

And have you tried to update the EFI Firmware to the latest.
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201518

You can test to convert the iso like the http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-mac-osx.
And then burn to a dvd or to usb media.

Checked the apple web site, I've got the latest BootROM, and SMC has no update available.  Looking into your other options.

If burned to a CD the MacBook should be able to boot tc off the cd, otherwise for a HDD or USB thumb drive you'll need the EFI version of Grub from the tc6 repo,  Also  for install to HDD or USB thumb drive you'll most likely need corepure64 installed

When I installed to a similar Macbook some years ago, I used bootcamp with the normal 32-bit edition. But mine boots CDs just fine (could be using bootcamp changed something in the firmware?).
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

I seem to recall some older mac's use 32-bit rather than 64-bit efi, whereas all pc's seem to use 64-bit uefi.

From a terminal window in the mac os:
Code: [Select]
$ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
...will confirm whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit efi - this will determine whether you need core (32-bit) or corepure64 (64-bit).

I presume you have an intel processor?

That's a good point,  Apple did release some 32bit MacBooks..
