Firewire?  Try a USB CD drive, or try the USB flash drive.

That's what I've read. These machines supposedly can't boot from USB.
If you Google    Sony Vaio PCG-R505EL linux    you'll find mostly problems.

Does 'ifconfig -a '  show that it has obtained an IP address from your router.
If so one of the manual install options in the wiki might work.

Remastering core.gz to include firewire modules might be an option.

Yes, but a lot more work than tce-loading and installing a bootloader.

It's always an alternative to remove the HD, install to it using another computer, put it back.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
