I discovered that wbarconf is killed on a pentium laptop under TCL 4.4. I can't say whether this was true of earlier versions (as this is my first installation (and first forum post)).
tc@gnomad:~$ file `which wbarconf`
/usr/local/bin/wbarconf: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.6.22, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
tc@gnomad:~$ uname -a

tc@gnomad:~$ md5sum -b `which wbarconf`
edit: added the MD5 digest
